Challenge

GCN Magazine wanted a way to connect and engage with its audience digitally during the period of unprecedented quarantine measures during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Working together, we developed the concept for a digital exhibition that would inform and engage their readership, drawing on the rich history of the magazine and the societal evolution it has born witness to.

Lisa Connell

Managing Editor, GCN

It has been a pleasure to reconnect and collaborate with Aidan, a former GCN staff member, on such an exciting and dynamic project. Aidan has brought Prism to life in a most fabulous way. His varied skills, expertise and attention to detail make him a fantastic web designer and project manager.

Approach

After sifting through a vast collection of photography, magazine clippings, archival material and other assets from the 2018 GCN30 exhibition, I devised a content strategy for Prism. Working alongside GCN’s in-house content, digital and design teams, I created a sitemap, wireframes and high-fidelity mockups for the website that would allow Prism to feel distinct from GCN, but a part of the family. Then, I began developing the custom website using Webflow, the advanced, no-code platform. Once built, the website went through thorough quality assurance testing and optimisation prior its launch to ensure the best possible experience on mobile, tablet and desktop devices.

Result

The result is Prism, a beautiful and ever-evolving digital experience that reflects Ireland’s LGBT+ community. The website launched successfully in July 2020 with GCN’s Managing Editor Lisa Connell applauding its UX: “One of my favourite aspects of Prism is its dynamism – it’s a very exciting user experience… I think that the way the content has been brought to life for a digital landscape is really great.”

Awards & Nominations

Prism was a 2020 nominee for Awwwards, the international professional web design and development competition body that celebrates innovative web design.
